E/e-mark
The Best Way to Get into the European Market for Automobile and Motorcycle Products
What is the E/e-mark?
EC directives and ECE regulations require all automobiles, motorcycles and their components imported to EU member states to be in conformance with a range of safety standards for drivers and the environment. A product that displays the E/e mark indicates that it complies with all the relevant regulations of a specific nation.
Why the mark?
All EU member states are required to incorporate the requirements of EC Directives and ECE Regulations into their local legislations. This ensures that all automobile and motorcycle products sold by manufacturers and operated by users conform to basic safety and environmental standards. All products covered by regulatory controls must be tested, certified and display the appropriate mark. Products without an E/e-mark can’t be sold or used in these member states.
Products covered by the E/e-mark:
Machinery or vehicles that can be driven along roadways such as motorcycles, small passenger cars, trucks and buses.
Motor vehilce lamps, horns, bulbs, rear view mirrors, automobile glass, tires, brake pads, etc.
Motorcycle helmets, children's safety seats, car alarms, automobile audio systems, hands-free kits, mobile phone chargers, onboard electronic accessories, etc.
- Non-Road Mobile Machinery Engines
Mobile machinery such as chainsaws, harvesters, forklifts and agricultural machinery.

How to Qualify for the E/e-Mark
The regulatory requirements must be taken into consideration at a product’s design stage. Product certification should be carried out by an accredited technical service to verify its compliance with the relevant regulatory requirements. After passing the test, the application document (including test report and the related technical information) must be submitted to the national transportation authority in any of the EU member states for certifications.
If a non-compliance product is sold within EC/ECE member states, its manufacturer and distributor can both be held responsible. The manufacturer will be held responsible if it is located within the country. If the manufacturer is located overseas, the local distributor will be held responsible. Before the transportation authority of a member state issues the E/e-mark, it must ensure that the manufacturer is legally registered and has the necessary quality-control system in place to ensure the consistency of the product when it enters mass production. The ISO 9000 is the best way to meet the above requirement. If no such certification is available, the responsible authority will carry out an inspection of the supplier’s factory.
